Since Spring Break...

Ok, yeah, it's been a while since I posted, but I doubt anyone noticed :)

To catch the two people that read my blog up to speed I'll post five pictures from each month that I missed (so April through November), even though you've probably already seen some of these pics on facebook! Oh well, different setting. Plus, I have music playing on my blog, so it makes for a different experience!

Spring Break

Garrett is off school and I am trying to entertain him. I took him to the park yesterday for a picnic, some artwork, and swinging on the swings. Today we saw the movie "Battle: Los Angeles." Not my idea of a good movie... but for an almost 10 year old boy, fantastic! :)

Since Adam doesn't like Galveston, I can pretty much only get him to go when I have leverage... and because it was my birthday, (and I get to do what I want on my birthday), I spent it on the cold beach :) Seeing the ocean never gets old for me, and is special no matter the time of year. So this was our New Years Day adventure:

Three Days of Christmas

As it has become our custom since getting married, we spent three days celebrating Christmas with different groups of family. The only thing I don't have a picture of is the Christmas Eve service at St. Paul's. It is something I really look forward to for so many reasons. This year's service was even more special because my dear friend Barbara Jackson joined us. Gifts are always fun to receive and are definitely appreciated, but my favorite memories each Christmas are those of family, friends, food, laughter and the small sacred moments where you just step back and think... thanks.

The last time I posted something was in early October... I think. Either way, time marches on for all of us, and of course many things have happened since that last post. Garrett is doing well in school (several pics to "prove" this ~ ha!) I am still watching Olivia, although, this will end in early January when she goes to daycare. We are still working on getting pregnant, but that hasn't happened yet. We are all looking forward to the holidays, and all of the joy that brings :) Basically, we are living life, and I'm sure you all are doing the same... God bless you in this holiday season and in the new year :)

What I've Been Up To

For the last month I have been working as a nanny for my friend Barbara. Each week day I watch her little (now 4 month old) girl, Olivia Simone. She is a sweet, active little baby. She only gets fussy for good reason (hungry, tired). She has been a champ at traveling to get Garrett from school, and she even braved the nursery at our church. Each day is a new story, and I get to witness it all!

Our Last Few Weeks

Garrett started 4th grade this past week. When he entered his new class room his new teacher told him to pick a desk. He looked around and finally settled on one next to some other boys. I asked him if he wanted me to leave and he said, "no." Then his best buddy from last years class walked in and all his nerves were gone! They started talking, and so I asked him again if he wanted me to stay and he said, "no, you can go mommy." Well, I know when I'm no longer needed... ;) In the meantime, I have been watching Olivia (my friends Barbara & Kyle's now 4 month old little girl). As her nanny and also as Garrett's mommy, my duties are all of a sudden doubled! I have never had to deal with two children at once, but I am adjusting. So far, taking Olivia to Garrett's school to pick him up in the afternoons has gone really smoothly. I know there might be days ahead where she is fussy, but for the time being she has been really chill... and Garrett has been very helpful and attentive. My only real complaint is the heat! I can't wait for the temperature to change and for fall to officially be here! But either way, my days have been filled with precious moments. Here are a few of them:

Austin/Lakeway Trip

This past weekend we visited Austin with Adam's Dad, brother Shawn and his girlfriend Rachel. In a city that we know, but not THAT well, I think we made the most of it (thank you GoogleMaps on Adam's IPhone!), and had a good time for the most part. We visited the Texas History Museum, went to Shultz's Beer Garden, ate at Hut's Hamburgers and had a drink on 6th street. It was hot, but we made the best of it! Later that evening when Adam's Dad, brother and gf went back to Houston we drove out to Lakeway (Lake Travis) to stay at the home of a good friend of mine from church. She and her husband were very gracious in welcoming us. We stayed at their second home where they had spent many years with their kids and various church youth groups over the years. They built a new house a few miles away (which was gorgeous also), but for the time being this house is empty except for the occasional visitor. We took in the view, enjoyed the quiet nature and relaxed. They have a lot of deer there, so we scattered deer corn at night, and then watched as a few deer arrived to eat the next morning. Before we left, we taught Garrett about leaving a house better than you found it :) After our friends took us out to breakfast, we drove back to the city and found a great parking spot on the drag. We looked at some of the street vendors art, went to the co-op to get Garrett a UT shirt for school, and had pizza and yogurt before heading home. I thought I was literally going to melt from the heat, so I was glad to get back in the air conditioned car... ha! We look forward to returning in the future... when it's not so boiling outside!

This Friday we attended the wedding of Adam's cousin Jerry in Hurst, Texas... meaning we drove there after our half day of work (I work now too) and arrived just in time to change clothes for the wedding. It was a ceremony filled with laughter and love :) We had a lot of fun visiting with family members and look forward to September when we will see them all again for Veronica's wedding!

This father's day we got to go see Rev. Charles Ruehl (the minister who married us) preach at a church in Baytown. He told me he was "so honored" to have us there... and we felt the same way :). Later on, we got together with Adam's side of the family to celebrate, as we normally do. There was lots of yummy mexican food, gifts, and fun. Jessica has started selling Scentsy, so we got to sample all of her inventory with that too. When it came time for opening up gifts there were several gift cards exchanged (guys are so easy to buy for) and a gag gift given to Adam that everyone got a kick out of (see pics below).

These are just a few pics from our first pool trip of the summer. I think Garrett and I look a lot of alike in these pics, and that's probably because I don't have makeup on. During part of our time at the pool I got out and read a book in the shade. Garrett looked at me and whined "Man! I should have brought MY book! Can we go get it?" It made me so happy :) He really grew to enjoy reading this year. It is no longer just a homework assignment; he actually has books he reads just for fun. Here's to a great summer!

End of the Season

This past Thursday Garrett's baseball team played their last game and boy did they go out in style. Going into this game they were in last place (when compared to all of the other Timbergrove teams in their division), but leave it to our guys to save their best performance for last (ha). The rules dictate that you can only score 5 runs per inning... and we did! Every kid hit the ball and we won 20 to 8, and actually moved up to NEXT to last place!! Hey, I consider that a major victory! Actually, our last place status was very deceptive. Our kids were very good, and when they lost they only lost by a run or so. It's not like we were being beat down each game. But you should have heard the parents of the other team! Talk about BAD sportsmanship! They were so INCREDULOUS that we were beating them. They were absolutely obnoxious. I think some parents forget that these are KIDS out there. Either way, our boys were beyond excited and proud of themselves, and it was great to end the season on a win. Then on Saturday we had our team party and Garrett received dog tags and a mini Dodgers bat. Best of all, Adam got a trophy for being the assistant coach and pitcher all season! We are really going to miss this group of kids and parents but are looking forward to kid pitch next season!

Cloudy Beach Day

My good friend Mary, her 2 year old son, Christian, and I went to Galveston last week. We had been planning on taking this trip for a while, and perfect weather or not, were just happy to be there! As soon as we reached the seawall, we rolled down the windows so we could smell the salty sea air. Then we found a free beach access where there weren't many people. The waves were incredible... if I were a surfer, I would have been out there trying to ride them. It was overcast, but I didn't care because that meant I didn't have to wear sunglasses (or squint). We made sand creations and snacked on green apples and chex mix. It was so relaxing sitting there listening to the crashing waves, feeling the sand beneath my feet and the wind against my face. It made me so thankful to God for giving me the eyes, ears and skin to witness and feel the beautiful things that he created. The only thing that put a damper on the day was thinking about the approaching pollution from the oil rig explosion. I hate to think about what it will do to all the fish, plants, coastlines and other wildlife. If it's safe to go back, I hope we have the chance to return many times this summer when Garrett gets out of school.

San Antonio/Austin Trip

This past Friday we drove to San Antonio for a little half weekend getaway. We stayed at the Omni (because we got a great deal) which was very nice. Adam and Garrett ran on the treadmill Saturday morning while I did a few leisurely laps in the heated indoor pool and chilled out in the hot tub :). After stopping by Target for some dramamine, we headed to Fiesta Texas. There were hardly any people there at 10 a.m., and it was overcast with a slight breeze. In other words, PERFECT for a theme park experience. I rode Poltergeist all by myself, in fact. However, I made sure and asked if it was safe to be the only one on the ride first... I mean, I love roller coasters but I still get nervous sometimes :). By noon though, the floodgates opened and the park was PACKED. SO... we decided to drive to Austin! We arrived to find a really cool art festival on 6th street, and had fun walking around, checking out the art, and of course people watching. Our next stop was the Capitol building. I thought Garrett might be bored, but he LOVED it! We even got to see a real protest rally, as there were people protesting Arizona's new immigration law on the Capital steps. All in all, we had a fantastic time. Sometimes it's good to get away, even if it's only for a day and a half :).

This collage is of baby pictures that I took of Garrett his first year of life. He was such a cute baby :). Collages are easy to make on walgreens.com, and fun to look at of course :). You pick out up to 20 pictures, and then it randomly arranges it for you. If you don't like the arrangement, you can "shuffle" the pics. Garrett's scrapbook from his first 6 months of life that I made is massive, and I love traditional scrapbooks, but they take so much time to make. If I do this collage book, not only will it force me to narrow down my pictures to only the best ones, but I'll be able to fit his first EIGHT years in one book, and then some! We went to the Rodeo this past Saturday and I have to say that we are SPOILED! Each year we get box seat tickets through Adam's mom's company and it is such a great experience. Not only is her boss a great host, but we get excellent seats, and a parking pass too! We had a lot of fun riding carnival rides and watching the show. Thank you Jolene (my m-i-l) and Howard (her boss)!! Yee-haw :)

Baby Shower for Barbara

This Saturday I threw a baby shower for one of my oldest friends, Barbara. (Umm... and when I say old, I mean we've been friends for a long time, not that she's 80 or something - ha!) Anyway, it was the first shower I had ever thrown, and I was a little nervous about everything being right. As it turns out, I got several compliments from many happy attendees. Yea! One mother of four even told me that it takes her months to plan a shower, and when I told her that I had pretty much pulled everything together in the past week, she said "you would never think that!" So... yea again! But most importantly, the mommy-to-be had a great time catching up with her friends. She received lots of cute clothes, a personalized scrap book, and 3 bumbos (apparently Babies-R-Us is not good about marking things off your registry). The lemon cake and sherbet punch (a recipe I pulled off the internet that morning) were big hits, as were the traditional Slovak sandwiches that Kyle and Barbara prepared. We played 5 games, and thank goodness I had 8 gifts (in the chance of a tie), because all of the gifts were given out! Also, I thought I might mention that Kahlua hung out the entire time with the girls. I thought she might be scared or shy, but nope! She sat right in between two perfect strangers and took in all of the festivities! I really enjoyed being able to honor Barbara and Kyle in this way, and I have to say that we are ready to meet you Olivia Simone!

Season Passes to Fiesta Texas!

This past weekend was opening weekend for Fiesta Texas. We were there this time last year, and this year wasn't going to be any different! Well actually, we were hoping it would be a little different... meaning that we had hoped Garrett would be tall enough to ride all the big rides. But alas, he is still not tall enough. One inch. That's all he needs... ONE INCH! At least he has something to look forward to though :). Anyway, we had such an awesome time. The weather was perfect and there were no lines!!! In fact, there were so few people there that you could stay in your seat and ride over and over again!!! I know that from here on out we probably won't get that chance again, so we tried to take advantage of it. However, we drove up there the night before and didn't get to our hotel until 11 p.m., and then woke up early (from excitement) the next morning, so by 4 p.m. we were tired and ready to go home. (The dramamine I had to take for motion sickness contributed to my tiredness too!) Either way, we are looking forward to going back!

Bayou Bend

Today was family day at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. What a treat! They didn't allow pictures of the art in the mansion but we took plenty of pics on the grounds. It was such a treasure and delight to explore these gardens on a day with such temperate weather :). Also, the radio station 88.7 was recording there, so we were treated to classical guitar and opera solos ~ Wow!! We plan on going back in the future, and recommend it to anyone interested in early American art/furnishings and history!

This Valentine's was so special... as always. It was Adam and I's sixth Valentines together. As is our tradition, he gave me a single red rose, which I will hang to dry on the wall with the other five :). The three of us had a very yummy dinner at Joyce's where we exchanged gifts and of course, posed for pics during and after! Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Adam and I celebrated 3 years of marriage on January 20th! I can't believe it's already been that long, but then again I can. We have dealt with a LOT these last three years... deaths, job changes, illnesses, moving schools etc. It's been rough at times, but the ONE thing that never wavered was our LOVE for one another :). So at the end of the day, all we can feel is blessed... no matter what we've gone through. The important thing is that we went through it together as a couple, which ultimately strengthened our bond. And there have been plenty of good times too! Although change can be hard at first, we have adjusted and have reached out for help when we needed to, made several wonderful new friends, and have seen positive changes in our lives all around as a result of new circumstances. So... for better or for worse... I love you Adam and look forward to the years to come!

TCH Fun Run (3K)

We signed Garrett up before Christmas to be a part of the Texas Children's Hospital Fun Run 3K. Last Thursday he got a little bag with a T-shirt, number, water bottle, wrist band, shoelaces, and a kids clif bar. He was so excited, and I was excited for him! Then I read the permission slip to ride the bus, and it said parents were encouraged to run/walk with their kids. Well, I haven't exactly been hitting the gym or trails lately, so I thought, Adam can do that and I'll just cheer them on. So, we got up at 5:30 a.m. to be on the bus leaving Harvard Elementary by 7 a.m. In hindsight, maybe we should have taken our car instead (the race didn't start until 9 a.m.), but hey, it was all a part of the experience :). Once we arrived at the George R. Brown, they had a warm up crew consisting of the UofH mascots, the Texans kicker, and an Army squad. Garrett was really excited to get his picture taken with the cougar mascot. I realized that with the number of people of there, I would need to stick with my boys, so I decided I would participate with them in the run. Finally, they corralled us out by grade group, and we were off! I thought we would be jogging and walking, but Garrett decided early on that we would jog the whole thing. So we jogged our little hearts out in the cold and drizzling rain, all the time having to dodge walkers. Surprisingly, Garrett and I finished the run, not having to stop to walk once! I know this seems like no big deal to a lot of people, but for an 8 year old, and a mom who is not a runner, I was proud. Oh, and Adam completed it too, but that's no big surprise :). It felt so good to cross the finish line and watch Garrett get his medal. Yeah for the Delouche family!!! :)

Long Lost Cousin

My dad was very closed-lipped about his family life growing up, so I have very few stories from his younger days. I do know that he had a half brother and a sister. The sister is my Aunt Joann, and the half-brother is my Uncle Huey. Or I should say was. He passed away in 2002 in the same way my dad did in 2007. I really didn't know anything about him... that is, until I connected with his daughter, Lori, on facebook. Lori is a few years older than me, and lives in South Carolina. She just happened to be coming to Houston for a business conference last week, so we took advantage of that situation and decided to meet for the first time. She actually came in a day earlier so we could have more time together. She is an awesome woman. We have so much in common, including music, philosophies on life and religion, and hobbies. It's hard to believe this is the first time I've met her, and yet we are alike in so many good ways. Garrett liked her too. He thought she was really fun. I am so grateful to be able to make contact with ANY family of mine since I don't have many members that are active in my life, or for that matter, alive. I look forward to staying in touch with her!

For Christmas, I bought Kahlua the chia pet cat grass planter. The seeds sprouted in three days, and were tall enough to eat in five. Let's just say that Kahlua was like a kid in a candy store... a kid that ate TOO MUCH candy... a kid that barfed as a result of that. Poor kitty, right?! She has since backed off; I guess she learned her lesson! Either way, she is really enjoying her present, and I am happy for it!

This new years I was incredibly blessed to be surrounded by new friends, old friends and family. I couldn't help but think how much has changed in this last year. I became a stay at home mom who gets to spend more time with her son and friends. Garrett transitioned very well to a new school and grew up so much. Adam and I decided that we need to start trying to have a baby. Wow. There is just so much in store for us in 2010. But back to new years eve! Fifteen of my closest friends came together and helped me celebrate my transition into my thirties. What a great party... I really couldn't have asked for more! Then, the next day, I was surrounded by family at one of my other favorite restaurants and was showered with love and gifts once again. Turning 30 was such a great experience for me! I have such high hopes for this new year and decade! :)

Christmas is really a three day event in our household. Christmas Eve we celebrated with Adam's Nana and Dad, last night we went to Adam's sisters house to celebrate with his mom's side of the family, and today we celebrated at his mom's house. This of course is endlessly exciting for Garrett (Ok, and me too!) because he gets three days of presents! We are very blessed, and these pictures are proof :)!

The candlelight service last night was magical, as it is every year. Was it a little wrong of me to bring a camera into church? Maybe. In my defense, however, the flash was turned off, and no one noticed the 2 pictures that I took... except for Adam of course. I will always have the images in my mind, but I just wanted to capture it digitally this year.

Garrett woke up this morning without having to be dragged out of bed , which is no surprise really since it's Christmas :). He loved all of his gifts and is happily playing one of his new video games as I type this. We just got through putting together his SpongeBob lego set, and he is excited about setting up his telescope tonight. Best of all, I didn't go over my spending budget with him this year~ yea! Adam did a great job picking out the things I steered him towards getting me (ha). Adam's Mom and Pop helped Garrett pick out some gift cards for us to have a date night with, complete with babysitting, which was a nice surprise. Now I have to go cook the green bean casserole and peach cobbler that I am supposed to bring to the family get together this afternoon. Merry Christmas everyone!!!

This year instead of buying a gingerbread house I bought a gingerbread train. Thank you Target for the great idea! Garrett couldn't wait to put it together... and now that it's assembled all he wants to do is eat it! Ha! I told him he at least had to wait until his dad got home so he could show it off :)

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Both. Anyone who knows me knows that I love wrapping presents (and using way too much tape!), but there are some gifts that just can't be wrapped!

2. Real tree or Artificial? I LOVE real trees, but we have an artificial one. It was given to us, and you can't beat FREE :). To make up for the lack of smell, however, I have a "fresh balsam" candle. I guess it's the best of both worlds :).

3. When do you put up the tree? The day after Thanksgiving of course!

4. When do you take the tree down? After New Year's.

5. Do you like eggnog? Gross.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Probably my doll house.

Last School Day of 2009

Garrett had his class holiday party this past Friday. The kids were so cute and sweet, and I think they had a lot of fun. I included Garrett's class picture in this post too. This is the third year in a row where he just happens to be standing right next to his teacher. He really likes Ms. Lofquist. He told me she is the most favorite teacher he's ever had. This is her first year teaching, and she is doing a great job. But back to the party ~ One of the dads brought his guitar and led a Christmas carol sing along, which all of the kids participated in. They played holiday phrase BINGO, and Garrett was the first to win! He got a chocolate and marshmallow santa~ yum :) They also ate pizza and goofed around, and passed out homemade cookies and cupcakes. It really reminded me of the class parties I had growing up, which was nice. One of the moms bought all of the kids 3D glasses, where when you look into the glare of a light you can see the image of an angel. We tried them out at home, looking at our Christmas tree, and it really did look like there was a little angel hovering for each light on the tree! So cool!

I Heart Christmas Cards

I have always loved receiving cards and letters in the mail. Throughout most of the year they are few and far between, but at Christmas time?? You get a "present" almost every day when you check your mailbox! It's so exciting!! It's just part of what makes this season so special. Knowing that others wish you well and care enough to send you a Christmas greeting really does make you feel loved and connected. I love sending cards too. This year I kicked it up a notch and wrote a newsletter. I hope what I sent out brings a smile to the face of everyone who receives them. Cards are probably the least expensive gift you buy each Christmas, but they go so far in spreading cheer!

I have to say... I only remember it snowing TWICE growing up, but it has snowed THREE TIMES in the five years Adam and I have been together. And yes, I said five. I stopped using our original anniversary date when we got married (it was Nov. 27, 2004), but Adam remembered... and told me as much. I have such a wonderful husband!! But to get to the snow, we really enjoyed it just as everyone else in Houston did. My cat wasn't too thrilled, but I really wanted a picture of my "Christmas kitty." Ha! When Adam got home at noon, we took some more pictures in the snow, and then later on when Garrett got home, we took even more. I love the picture of Garrett nailing me with a snowball. I can't believe my little digital camera captured that so well! Yea! Garrett also tried to see if his tongue would stick to our light pole outside. What can I say... he's watched "A Christmas Story" one too many times!

In a house with boys, everything you do turns into a wrestling match. :) We had a lot of fun though, and I actually got Garrett to be still and serious when placing the angel on top of the tree. We also set up the nativity scene handed down to me from my mom and dad. It has a built in music box that plays "Silent Night." It is so very special to me. :) To top everything off, I set out our Spode plates in the dining room, and decorated the foyer table with the arrangement I made a few weeks ago. We are definitely in the Christmas mood now!

I know that most of you begin to set up your Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving. I decided to start early this year, and completed our windows, bathrooms, and kitchen (towels) after we got back from our Thanksgiving feast in Lufkin. We even let Garrett set up his mini tree in his room 2 days ago. I am so glad that we got to enjoy such a nice holiday with Adam's Nana and Dad, but I am also so ready for Christmas! The pictures below will reflect this... from our Thanksgiving pic to my early Christmas decorations. Let the festivities begin!!!

LSU vs. LA Tech

Ok, first of all, I realize that this game was supposed to be a blow out and it wasn't. It was a very close game... much to the chagrin of the "fans" around me. I put fans in quotation marks because I was appalled by their immature, angry antics. Men around me were pounding their seats, standing up and yelling expletives, talking to one another like they were the coaches... you name it. Adam and I kept looking at each other with wide eyes whispering things like "yeah, they should fire the current coaching staff and hire these guys, since they seem to know what should be happening down there" (I hope you read the implied sarcasm). But despite that, we had a GREAT time! The marching band did a wonderful tribute to the armed forces of the U.S. ~ it was inspiring! I SO enjoyed getting some one-on-one time with my hubby :) We have lots of other stories and inside jokes that accompany this trip, but I won't share them as much of them are "you would have to have been there" moments. Ha! Even though I enjoyed my time away, I was so excited to get to see Garrett and my kitty cat. What can I say, home is where the heart is!

Quest for Candy!

We had a successful Halloween at the Delouche house. I woke up early (as usual) and felt a little guilty that we had yet to carve a pumpkin. My solution? I got crafty, and hollowed out a cantaloupe half I had in the fridge, carved a face into it, and set it on a plate with a candle behind it. Garrett loved it! :) We also got crafty later, with a kit that one of the moms had sent home in Garrett's backpack. We glued together a little foam Halloween sign that I hung from our kitchen window. So cute! Later that afternoon, we all went to the First Baptist Carnival. Garrett got some batting practice in, rode a mechanical bull, and jousted with his dad among other things. We left as the sun was setting so that we could go home, eat some dinner, and hit the streets for trick-or-treating. After all, that's what Halloween is all about for kids! The more candy the better. As Adam said, it's about getting as much candy as you can, stashing it in your room, and eating on it for the next 6 months! Ha! Well, I won't let Garrett take his to his room, but after inspecting it all he gets some for lunch each day. I had fun walking with him from house to house, making sure he said thank you, and giving the "parent wave" from the sidewalk. Unlike believing in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, this is something he can enjoy and participate in for many years to come. Happy Halloween!

In "Hot Water"

Last Sunday, our hot water heater broke and flooded into our bedroom. Pop was good enough to go with Adam and purchase a new one which they installed themselves. The aftermath, however, has left us with half a room... meaning all my bedroom furniture is shoved to one side. It might be a while before we can re-carpet our bedroom. We are trying to conserve funds because Adam is having shoulder surgery in a little over a week. Please pray for him! We are going about as usual, but are a little anxious about these big events hanging over our heads. God is good and will see us through, but we could use all the encouragement from friends we can get!!

Cub Scout Camp Out!

Adam and Garrett went camping this past weekend with his cub scout pack. They had such a good time! I am jealous that I didn't get to go, but I had to work a wedding at the church. When they arrived at the site, it was raining and cold, and Adam had to put up the tent. He got soaked and was freezing and miserable :(, but he said the next day was great. The grounds were beautiful and there were lots of bike trails. A few weeks before the trip Adam didn't want to go. He said, and I quote, "people aren't supposed to sleep in tents, that's why houses were invented." So imagine my surprise when he came home and said he can't wait to go again!! Adam worked with Garrett in their tent Friday night, helping him memorize the motto and such. As a result, he earned his Bobcat badge the next morning! He also got to ride his bike, cook sausage (cooking is part of earning another badge), carve soap with a pocket knife, and tie a knot. I can't wait for the next camp out so I can go with them!!

The Long Month

Has anyone else ever noticed that October takes forever to pass by? Maybe it's because we are all praying for cooler weather each day... or maybe it's the Halloween decorations in the store that come out in September for a holiday that's a month away! Or maybe it's because we are all looking forward to Christmas! Even crazier is the fact that while I was shopping for Garrett's costume they already had out Christmas cards!! I really dislike that they (retail stores) just gloss over Thanksgiving, which is one of my favorite holidays :) This past week has been a nice one for our family though. We celebrated Adam's Nana's 79th birthday AND my friend Elaine's birthday on the same day (Sept. 28). On Sept. 30th, Garrett had the idea to pray to my dad in heaven to wish him a happy birthday ("I hope you eat lots of cake"). Long month or no, I'm just happy it's fall. I hope you all are enjoying this cooler weather (less than 90 degrees!), and that you have a great October!

Help with Parenting

For any parent or parent-to-be who is looking for some great resources I would highly recommend the website familylife.com. I recently ordered a few books on how to better pray for your children ("While They Were Sleeping" & "The Power of a Praying Parent") and can't wait to receive them so I can share some of the wisdom they impart. It's never too late to start praying for your children's hearts, their future spouse and children... or just for future children of your own! I also have started attending a Bible study entitled "Shepherding Your Child's Heart" (named after the book by Ted Tripp). In just one week of fellowship and reading, I already feel more of a connection to the Holy Spirit, and a renewed zeal for parenting and disciplining Garrett in the right... and more effective... way. I feel confident that with a willing heart and the right advice, we can all become better parents! There is always room for improvement! I want to encourage any parent out there that might feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or just too busy to address issues the right way, that you are not the only one! All parents need help sometimes, and if we can prioritize our time in such a way to make room for God's instruction, we will reap great benefits. May God bless our children, families, and our attention to his Word!

New Beginnings

Garrett started 3rd grade AND finally pulled out his very loose (hanging on by a thread) front tooth, all in the same day. This morning, on his 2nd day of school, he surprised me by asking if he could go to the free breakfast, and then actually showering and dressing quickly! Normally, it's like pulling teeth (pun intended) to get him ready in the mornings! I got to sit with him in the cafeteria while he enjoyed his milk, breakfast sandwich, yogurt and orange (thank you HISD!). We looked at all the college banners that line the walls, locating the one that matched his shirt and of course, the LSU one. I walked him upstairs to his classroom where kids were seated against the wall waiting for the bell and for his teacher to open the door. I asked if he wanted me to wait with him and he said "No, I'm Ok." ...I guess he really is growing up (sniff) :)

Last night, Sami and I went to see our friend Laura's stage debut as "Charlotte" in a "Gone with the Wind"-esque melodrama at Theatre Suburbia. We had a lot of fun. They really encouraged active audience participation, which included throwing popcorn at the villain! (Laura, I appreciated the smiles you sent our way from the stage :) My only regret is that we didn't get a picture with you!!!) But... Laura had a packed house, and lots of fans to greet her afterwards, so I didn't want to stop the flow. Congrats Laura!! :)

Making the Most of the Last Days of Summer!

I can't believe how fast this summer has flown by. One minute I was worrying about how we would fill our time, and here it is, a week before school starts! Our days have been filled with friends, family, required reading (not a favorite of Garrett's) and FUN! Garrett starts school on the 24th and thanks to some help from a friend and a really productive shopping trip, we are all ready! What a great weekend we had! It was full of good company, yummy food (meat pies!), and many family stories. My father-in-law took me on an hour and a half 4-wheeler tour of the Delouche family acreage that backs up to the Cane River. He kept asking me "you know where you're at now?", and I kept having to answer "No!" (...maybe if I had an aerial shot!) Garrett got to ride a 4-wheeler by himself, learned how to shoot a BB gun, and got pretty attached to Uncle Charles :) More impressive to all of us though was that he sat quietly through an entire Catholic Mass. Aunt Doris showed us a few old plantations and kept us entertained with all of her stories. As for me, I was just happy to be out in the country and see the stars at night. Then there were the bugs I didn't even know existed... :) All in all it was just good to be around family that live their day-to-day lives in such a carefree manner. Adam really walked away wanting to find ways to de-stress his "big city" life a bit. It's nice to be home, but we look forward to returning for another visit!

Father's Day is Fast Approaching!

Father's day is still a tough holiday for me. I miss my Dad and probably always will. These pictures are from our trip last weekend to San Antonio with Adam's Mom and Pop. Pop booked us some very nice rooms at the Omni La Mansion Del Rio (meaning on the River Walk). We had such a good time. On Saturday we spent most of the day at Fiesta Texas, as it was the last day we could use our Spring passes that we bought back in March. Believe me... we made the most of it! Sunday we went to Mi Tierra's for breakfast, which is in the Mercado (Spanish Market). Mom and Pop surprised Garrett with an early birthday cupcake and then we did some souvenir shopping. We were so sad to leave!

This was just too cute not to share~ Garrett made me this card at school as pictured below. He was very proud of it, and I was privileged to receive it. Notice on the outside how it says "Your the best mom ever"? Well, that is repeated twice more inside, but in different forms. My favorite is his attempt at poetry: "Violets are red bonnets are blue I have the best mom ever in the hold wide world! Your Son, Garrett" (notice how he spelled whole). I asked him why his poem didn't rhyme, and he cocked his head to the side and said "well, does it really have to?" Of course not. I love it just the way it is...

I just wanted to take a moment to brag about how well Garrett and his team are doing so far this baseball season. They have won their first 2 games, and have really excelled at batting. Granted, the first team was just "I feel so sorry for them" bad, but the second team's kids were huge... and older (which wasn't exactly fair). We thought for sure we were goners when we saw them, but our boys pulled it off and won! This is their second year of coach pitch and this year they switched to hardballs. Garrett has gotten on base each time he has gone up to bat, and he seems to be a little more alert in the field. He's never been thrilled about the outfield in the past, but this year he has taken an interest in the short stop position. Hey, atleast he's not spinning around making himself dizzy until he falls down anymore... although that was funny when he did that when he was younger! The coach rotates them between different positions so that they learn as much about the game as they can, but so far they've struck out the other teams so fast that they really aren't getting much game time outfield experience! I just hope that they keep working hard and having fun, because I know that some of the teams they will be playing in the future might not be such cakewalks! Either way, they have a lot to be proud of. Go Warriors!!

Easter Bunny's Last Visit?

Easter is my favorite holiday--- it has been since I was a kid. I've tried to carry on the special and fun traditions my mother did with me with my own child. But alas, Garrett is getting too old for the Easter Bunny part of it, and it makes me sad. There is such a short window of time when they are aware of and can enjoy all of the make-believe fun. It seems like just when they are really getting into it - poof! - they are all grown up and too "big" to believe in such nonsense. Luckily, my Garrett still played along this year. He questions ("is it a REAL bunny, or a man in a bunny costume?")... and I've had plenty of opportunities to tell him the truth... but I just can't bring myself to do it!! Adam thinks he's "past his prime" and it would do him some good maturity wise if we ceased with the whole charade, but I just HAD to have at least ONE last run with it this year. Can you blame me? So... here are possibly the last pictures of my little boy thinking a bunny snuck in our house and left him surprises this Easter.

Either way, I hope everyone had a magical Easter, bunny or no. It was a great time to enjoy family, food, and of course our church. After all, hidden eggs are fun, but they certainly aren't the most miraculous thing we celebrate this day...
